Our relationship with Chess In The Schools started in 1997, ten years ago, same as this web site. The connection has been parent coordinator Phil Arnold, and school coordinator Jude Rohn who started both the Chess Club and the Website when Jack Regan was principal and PS 166 was part of District 3. Well, Mr. Regan retired, Phil Arnold's children graduated, and District 3 is no more, but our chess team has prospered. Over the past six years (and four different chess coaches from Chess in the Schools, we have consistently been among the top ten elementary teams in the city. Three years ago due to our losing Title One Funding (school population too prosperous) we also lost our funding from Chess In The Schools. Thanks to parents of team members, and the PTA (funding from Danny O'Donnel and from the Kaplan Fund) we were able to hire a wonderful Chess Coach previously with; CIS Jonathan Corbblah and continue with our chess club, Chess in the Classroom, and with fielding a team. Come see the trophies and plaques arrayed on the shelves in the library!! Some of our strongest players have graduated (those same first graders who were in our first club) and the Delta team is made up of five ex 166ers. Three of our former stars are on the Mott Hall 2 team, and two former players are on the IS 44 team., and
and several of our original team members
are stars in the high school firmament..
Coach Raul Marquez continues on our coaching staff. He is
also a former CIS coach and was with us when we were part of that
organization. He also coaches for the After School Enrichment
Club Chess component.
Parent tournament coordinator Alex Duda designed the above logo which can be seen on tshirts to be worn by team members and supporters alike. Stephanie Crossman is now the tournament coordinator.
