PS 166 PTA Communications Committee

Mission

We want to be the kind of PTA where members feel comfortable speaking their views, feel confident that they are being heard, and have a clear sense of what direction we all, as a community, want to go. As members of the communication committee, it's our responsibility to make sure that all PTA messages --to and from parents, teachers, and PTA leaders --go through as clearly, simply, and with as broad a reach as possible. Our goal for this year? To find the most efficient way to communicate, the best way to keep records, and the clearest possible roadmap for PTAs in the future. Here are some of the roles we're looking to fill this year.

Positions

Chairperson - Liaison with PTA Executive Committee; coordinate activities of other committee members.

Editor - Using information supplied by reporters and various PTA committees, lay out on computer and write (and/or edit) monthly PTA newsletter for distribution via backpacks; post monthly newsletter to Webmaster; edit and/or offer editorial advice to other PTA members throughout the year as they prepare flyers, mailings, postings, news releases, etc.

Reporters - Under Editor's leadership, gather information from PTA officers, committees, teachers, etc. for inclusion in the monthly newsletter. Produce and/or find articles of general interest to members (e.g., tutors in Manhattan, educational resources, etc.)

Translator - Fluent speaker able to translate into Spanish (with the aid of an internet translation site) the monthly newsletter, PTA bulletins, flyers, etc.

Publicist - Consult with PTA leadership for ways to publicize school to the "outside world" for recruiting, fund-raising, and resource-building efforts; oversee efforts to recruit new families into the school -plan and staff school tours, tour follow-up, mailings, etc.; help publicity committees with various PTA events throughout the year.

Webmaster - Maintain school web page; work with other committee members to make sure that we can easily access and update --on computer --all our flyers, brochures, newsletters, mailing lists, and records. The goal is everything in one central, secure location, but with multiple points of access (possible solution: PTA Archives --password protected --accessible via the Web). Postings - Xerox and distribute flyers; maintain PTA bulletin board and suggestion box.

Outreach - Work with Class Representatives to create a telephone "bucket brigade" able to reach parents and teachers directly when necessary.
